Nu Skin EB Appeal.
A core part of NSE's operating philosophy is to act as a force for good throughout the world. We fulfill this objective through our Force for Good Foundation - a source of funding for, amongst other things, finding cures for life threatening diseases. One such disease is Epidermolysis Bullosa - or EB as it is more commonly known. This is a very distressing skin blistering condition which varies in degree from mild to severe and is often fatal. The ladies have been supporting Debra for over tens years and Debra is very lucky to have such a wonderful group of happy, charming and loyal supporters.Chat online - 19th July 2003
Meeting on the net
The Geographic size of Australia does not lend itself to a close social network and IRC managed to gather most of the key people who are involved in Debra around Australia and create casual meeting of ideas and current issues that the various states and New Zealand are dealing with. There are so many factors to holding a conference and there are a lot of improvements needed in the hosting of such meetings. An alternative available to us on the soon to come national siteis a forum. The LIVE aspect of IRC and Chat seemed to pose a few problems, using a forum reduce the need for immediate live responses as we do on IRC. It allows for lengthy replies and helps with managing multithreaded conversations.
Note: Using voice digitizing systems requires high network bandwidths, and if possible on a PSTN modem, the systems create even more complexity when wanting to hold conferences across the network. Im not sure what the current software is like, and I'm more than happpy to be a guinea pig for anyone who wants to look into it. I think a forum on the website to store and publish longer ideas and news stories, IRC to socialise and keep up to date with current affairs, and the normal one to one telephone communication and personal meetings to keep everyone in touch. The websites are there for information, news and marketing material and technology is bringing us closer every day.. it's a good thing...:)

To sum it all up we had a wonderful time and met some pretty amazing people. The venue was excellent and everything was laid on.The Nuskin corporate manager Nigel Sinclair was one of the guest speakers and he strongly supported a national body being formed as did most people. At the end of the 2 days there was an open forum meeting, the main subject was forming a national body, issues were discussed, etc.and then we had to leave to catch the plane.
Another guest speaker was Lynn Anderson (EB Medical Research Foundation) from the States. Both of her children died from RDEB in their teenage years and she now fundraises. She has raised over 4 millionm dollars, her main message was don't despair, they have 2 new processes to replace the effected genes in the skin for RDEB from the stem cells (grafting and by injection). Both have to be approved by the government so they can begin to experiment on humans instead of mice. This is a lengthy process......
Most of the other speakers were EB sufferers or their parents. We met Mindy from NZ who is the coordinator. She is applying for a 2 year visa extension to stay on, she has thoroughly enjoyed her 6 months so far. We met Humphrey and his mother. Wonderful people.........the list goes on.
Anna (from NZ) was telling us how they lobbied to the Government so EB sufferers can get all free dressings, etc. A family from Christchurch said that their dressings and care totals $100,000 / year. NZ are looking at holding kids camps because the kids benefit so much from it. (as in the States)
Nuskin have offered any help required so I think we should take advantage of that and learn from the different models that have been set up in the business world, etc. From all that I heard, the general feel is to keep the state groups due to different states regulatory compliance, health care settings, etc.
Nuskin stated that he saw the needs for a national body to
- - register as a charitable organisation
- - better bargaining power
- - central source of education
- - central source of funding and clout
- - need national patron for Australia (the right person can bring a wealth of contacts, etc)
- - national data base and website
- - national newsletter / pamphlet
- - create partners (in the business world)
- - specialist funding resource
- - provide additional carers / and funds for EB camp
- - raising profile and educating public
- - specialist care
